Designated a Unesco World Heriage Site in December 1996, the A-Bomb Dome stands as stark reminder of the destruction unleashed on the Japanese city of Hiroshima at the close of World War 2. The bomb exploded almost directly over the building, which at the time was the Hiroshima Prefectural Industrial Promotion Hall. The remains which have been artificially propped up, are the only ruins from the bombing which have been left intact in the city.
